I did B.A (History , Sociology), Masters of Social Work (MSW) and Ph.D in Anthropology on ‘ Water management through traditional Technologies in India’ With 3 years of work experience in CAPART, Ministry of Rural Development, GOI
Now I wants to persue to civil services, plesae suggest, which subject should I go ahead. I decided sociology as first option in PT, is it Ok? if we see from negative marking angle in PT.
What would be second (Public Adminstration/ Geography/ History) one ? please suggest me.

I am also B.Tech CSE graduate .
For computer science student there is no subject there in the UPSC syllabus. But it may assumed that, of having high calls, UPSC may add some computer science subjects from 2013 onwards..
Well, for then, Geography and Mathematics or statistics, if are well in Maths and related siblings of Mathematics.

I ko that no matter how much time is considered, the above Questions are NOT gonna be even looked at heck. BUT as an educated and mannerred Undergraduate, I can just request for Help, so please let me know about the best combination of subjects that I can take as I am doing B.Sc final year with the subjects Chemistry, Genetics and Microbiology. I can consider Chemistry as one of the optionals as I am good at it but I can’t decide what the other optional I should be taking. i am 2008 passed out graduate in B.E. electronics and communications.
i got placed in 2 companies during my graduation but not at joined in either company.my joining will be in may this year. i am very much interested in civil services. i am in a great dilemma of choosing optionals.i am interested in psychology, public administration,economics,law.suggest me possible other options also.i am avid reader of news papers,national magazines.
is the academic record and work experience is helpful in clearing the civils examination.because i got only 67% in graduation but i have above 90 % both in 10th,+2 levels.and still a fresher.

If we critically analyse last 2-3 years the rank in the UPSC exam ..
We easily conclude engineering subjects as well as scinece subjects
are not good choice becasue of lenthy syllbaus , less scoring and
lenthy question paper ( based on contextual UPSC experience )
You can take Geography as a first optional subject.
For Second optional you can check :
Public Administration Or Philosophy or Psychology

Medical Science is not good optional subjeect for Civil Service exam.
For UPSC exam , Engineering subjects are not good choice.
For Civil Service Exam , you can select : Public Administration ,
Or Philosophy Or Georaphy Or Psychology Or Sociology.
So Give Proper time , For Analysing above subjects , Pl check last Year
Questions Paper , Syllabus and your skill.

Public Administration and Philosophy Or
Geography and public Administration Or
Geography and philosophy Or
Public Administration and Psychology Or
Sociology and public Administration Or
For IAS exam …. Engg Subjects are not
good choice becasue these subject have very
lengthy syllabus and less scoring.
Therefore analyse based on your interest ,

good optional subjects becoz of lengthy syllabus , lengthy
question paper and less scoring.
In the first step , you can analyse following optional subject :
- Geograpy : ( Pre + main ) or ( main )

- Philosophy : ( Main )
- Psychology : ( Main )
- Sociology : ( Pre + Main ) or ( Main )

this optional subject as a first optional subject.

Basically Philosophy is a traditional subject and easy to complete.
Your information about Public Administration is not correct.
You can opt Public Administration as a first optional subject ( Pre + Main ).

Thanks for your prompt reply. I also have some other questions.
1. My mother tongue is Bengali, but I have done my schooling in English. Bengali was my second language. I have gone through the syllabus for both these languages. The syllabus for English seems to be lengthier than Bengali. Can you suggest which one should I opt for? Materials for Bengali are hard to find. Does your institute provide coaching for Bengali?
2. You have suggested that i should take Sociology. But I have totaly no idea what it is. Will it be possible to grasp the subject in only 15 months?
3. I believe your institute does not have a centre in Kolkata. In that case I am left with the option of Correspondance materials only. Will that be helpful?

I am student of B.tech computer science technology. I have very strong grip on maths.So, I want to take maths as my optional subject.
But, when i met some experienced persons of u.p.s.c exam, they suggested me you must not take this subject, because it’s so tough and even i.i.t students cannot pass it. They advised me to take on of the following subjects.
1)public admi.
2)psycology
3)sociology
4)Political science
5)literature(Gujarati)
(None of above subject has technical background and i’m technical student)
are they true?
I should not take maths?

subjects are not good …. these subjects are not
producing result so when you think about
for choosing science subjects as an optional
subjects …Rethink again and analysis ..
For Science and technical Background Geography
and philosophy are also very good optional subject.
Therefore analyze last year question papers a and syllabus of following optional subjects:
Geography
Public Administration
Philosophy
Sociology
Psychology etc.

Its a very tough job to analyse what subjects to choose for IAS Exam
I’d like to now , amongst Public admin \philosophy \psychology \sociology which subject to choose as mains and the other subject interelated to that main amongst above given.

Dear Sir,
I am a resident of Bombay and have completed BE in august 2009.
This will be my first attempt and I can appear 4 times in any of the five years between 2010-2014. I started thinking about CSE in October 2009 and have started preparation in Dec 2009. Should I appear in May 2010 or shud I go for May 2011?
After going through syllabus and papers of various subjects of various subjects, I found that I could choose 2 optionals from History, Pol Sci, Pub Ad, Geography in that order of interest. I am inclined more towards History and Pol Sci Combination. What is ur opinion on this combination?
Should I give prelims with History or Political Science?
Every subject has its nuances. And more so in the UPSC Civil Services exam. UPSC expects a certain something from a candidate of a particular subject. What should one keep in mind while beginning to prepare Political Science optional and during preparation?
Which books are a must, which an aspirant with political science cant do without?

If you want to become an I.A.S. officer computer knowledge is not necessary.As a computer engineer,why do you need to become I.A.S?
Computer is not related to I.A.S.You can take maths as an optional subject in I.A.S. which better suits you.You can take any science subjects like physics,chemistry etc as second optional subject in I.A.S.Computer science is not an optional subject and not included in civil services exam.You hould have enquired about I.A.S. from any highly knowledgeable person before joining B.E/B.Tech.
If you have studied computer you can better go for other jobs or Computer engineer.

You are eligible for UPSC but you have to show the indian certificate proof from where you belongs.
You must have to show your certificate which proves you are indian candidate, for foreign candidate UPSC is not allowed.
IAS,IFS,IPS are the premier civil services in india,only people belongs to this country can only be selected.
